Newlyweds for 793 days.

21 Nov

Even though C and I are already going on year 3, I still feel like a newlywed. And it’s now 793 days of newlywed adventures. Married to C has been such an incredible gift and blessing from God. A man who follows after God’s heart, who loves me even at my worst, and has committed his life to me and our family. In thinking about this I decided to look up what we had written about each other when we first got engaged. It was so fun to look back and see two love notes of two recently engaged people, excited about forming a life together.

Looking back (Summer of 2009):

To Lissette, From Curtis-

What stands out most about Lissette is most definately her heart. It is the most pure and loving heart I have ever met. Lissette embodies God’s heart. She has a love for children, a compassion for the oppressed, she is a servant and has devoted her live to that.

She is an accomplished and determined woman that is capable of so much, even beyond what she even knows. She sees a task, and never shys away from it, but takes challenges head on. She knows what needs to be done and does it, without comlaint or whining. she always smiles when she goes through things.

When I am around Lissette I am reminded of the things that truly make life important, that God is first and that serving him, through serving others is how we should all live our lives. Her heart and her smile provide an encouragement that I cannot explain, but whatever I encounter with her by my side I know that I can succeed.

Lissette is the type of woman that you pray for, but I must admit, I didn’t think she existed. I have always thought that I would need to comprimise, to settle in some areas or to have to overlook things that I knew werent what I wanted. But Lissette changed all of that. As I got to know her better and better, I saw a woman that was, in every way, everything I had prayed for.

I heard once that you shouldn’t look for a partner to complete you, because that is something that only God can do, but look for someone that compliments you, that makes you want to be better. In everything Lissette is that. She is my everything, and in all that I do, she reminds me that I can do better, and she makes me want to be better, to achieve all that God has made me for.

To Curtis, From Lissette-

Curtis stole my heart in Africa.

Curtis is the man that I have always prayed for and God has given him to me. At the age of 14 I dedicated my life to God and at the moment I told him I wanted to serve him and only him. I wanted to have a solid foundation in my relationship with God before I began any relationship with a man. Through those years I prayed for my future husband and learned that God answers prayers. I have waited and prayed for someone like Curtis. He is my first and only love. He has a servant heart, he’s compassionate, caring, selfless, intelligent, patient, loving, funny, and loves people and loves God. When I think of Curtis I am reminded of John 15:12-13:

“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” He has exemplified this in our relationship and I hope to do the same.

I’ve asked Curtis several times, what his goal in life is. His answer has always been, to influence and make a difference in the lives of others. He has a servant’s heart. He has served at our church in many ways by leading a community group and being a part of global missions. He has helped and served at the crisis pregnancy center in countless ways. Whether it’s moving couches, working in the garden, or giving rides. He has served in Mexico and in Africa, whether it was carrying bricks, building in hot weather for 8 hours, or playing with children.

We met serving and our hope is that we continue to do just that for the rest of our lives: help others.

I have found with Curtis the love that 1 Corinthians 13 describes:

“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud  or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.  It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.'”

And i get to marry this man!

And now 2 years later:
